Safer e-mail with Thunderbird for Windows XP

Non è detto che Thunderbird sia il miglior programma di posta in assoluto e che debba andar bene per tutti: è semplicemente il programma di posta che uso io e che quindi conosco abbastanza bene da poter consigliare e documentare.

Se qualcuno usa altri programmi di posta e vuole scrivere una miniguida simile a questa, la pubblicherò volentieri qui. L'indirizzo per contattarmi è il solito topone@pobox.com.

NOTA: Queste istruzioni brevi riguardano Thunderbird soltanto come programma per la posta e non coprono il suo uso come programma per la gestione dei newsgroup. Lo scopo di questa miniguida è spiegare come si installa e configura Thunderbird in modo da ottimizzarne la sicurezza.

Thunderbird is not necessarily the best e-mail program ever and I don't expect it to be the ideal solution for everyone: it's just the program that I use and know well enough to recommend and explain here.

NOTE: These quick-and-dirty instructions only cover Thunderbird as an e-mail program. They do not deal with Thunderbird as a newsreader. The purpose of this mini-guide is just to show you how to install and configure Thunderbird so as to optimize its security.

Scaricamento

Andate al sito di Thunderbird, che è www.mozillaitalia.org per la versione italiana. Trovate il link all'Installer Windows e salvatelo sul vostro disco rigido.

Il file salvato si chiama Thunderbird Setup 1.0.exe.

Downloading Thunderbird

Go to Thunderbird's website www.mozilla.org and find the link to Thunderbird downloadable file. It's usually labeled rather obviously, e.g. "Download Thunderbird". Click on the link and the file will be saved to your hard disk.

The name of the saved file is Thundebird Setup 1.0.exe.

Installazione di base

Chiudete tutti i programmi aperti e lanciate il file di Thunderbird che avete scaricato.

Nella finestra di dialogo Benvenuti in Thunderbird, cliccate su Avanti.
Compare la finestra di dialogo del contratto di licenza. La licenza è in inglese anche nella versione italiana, ma leggetela se potete (mi corre l'obbligo di dirlo, mica posso incoraggiarvi ad accettare un contratto senza leggerlo!). Poi attivate la casella Accetto i termini del contratto di licenza e cliccate su Avanti.
Nella finestra di dialogo Tipo di installazione, scegliete Standard e cliccate su Avanti.
Nella finestra di dialogo Selezionare i componenti, cliccate su Avanti. Questa finestra serve soltanto come promemoria di dove verrà installato Thunderbird sul vostro disco rigido.
Il computer macina per un po'. Attendete con fiducia.
Compare la finestra di dialogo Installazione completata. Se volete configurare Thunderbird subito, cliccate su Fine. Se preferite rimandare, disattivate la casella Avviare Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 adesso e poi cliccate su Fine.

Installing Thunderbird: the basics

Close all open programs and launch the Thunderbird file you downloaded.

In the Welcome to Mozilla Thunderbird dialog box, click Next.
Software license agreement: You should read the license, as with all the software you use, but I can't force you, can I? Anway, this license basically says that you're free to use Thunderbird forever and wherever you like at home or at work. When you've finished reading the license, click the I accept the terms of the License Agreement button and then click Next.
Setup Type: choose Standard and click Next.
Summary: this is just to remind you of where the program will be installed on your hard disk. Click Next.
Files are written to disk. Wait.
Install complete: if you want to configure Thunderbird immediately, just click Finish. If you prefer to configure Thunderbird some other time, click on Launch Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 now so as to un-check the checkbox, then click Finish.

Configurazione di Thunderbird

Se già usate un programma di posta (per esempio Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape o Mozilla) sul computer sul quale avete installato Thunderbird, ho buone notizie per voi: Thunderbird è spesso in grado di acquisirne automaticamente i parametri e quindi in gran parte si autoconfigura.

Se non è così, procuratevi i dati tecnici del vostro account di posta. Dovreste trovarli sul sito del vostro fornitore d'accesso oppure nelle impostazioni del vostro programma di posta attuale.

I dati che vi servono sono:

il vostro indirizzo di posta
il nome del server SMTP del vostro fornitore d'accesso
ll nome del server POP del vostro fornitore d'accesso
la password della casella di posta
il nome utente o login da immettere per consultare la casella di posta

Se Thunderbird è in grado di importare le impostazioni dal vostro programma di e-mail attuale, gran parte di questa sezione verrà autoconfigurata.

Configuring Thunderbird

If you're already using another e-mail program, such as Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape or Mozilla, on the computer where you've installed Thunderbird, I've got some good news for you: Thunderbird is often capable of importing the settings of your current e-mail program and therefore does most of the configuration automatically for you.

If this is not the case, you need to find the settings of your e-mail account. They should be on the Website of your Internet provider or in the settings section of your current e-mail program.

This is the information you need:

Your e-mail address
The name of your provider's SMTP server
The name of your provider's POP server
The password of your e-mail account
The username or login that you enter in order to read your e-mail

If Thunderbird is able to import your settings from your current e-mail program, most of this section will be already configured for you.

Inizio configurazione

Se dovete avviare Thunderbird, scegliete Start > Programmi > Mozilla Thunderbird > Mozilla Thunderbird.

Ricordatevi che potete trascinare questa voce del menu Start a una posizione più comoda, per esempio il pannello principale del menu.

Se avete un firewall come Zone Alarm, che sorveglia i programmi in uscita, vi avviserà che c'è un nuovo programma che sta cercando di accedere a Internet. Va bene così. Permettete permanentemente a Thunderbird di accedere a Internet (in Zone Alarm, cliccate su Remember prima di cliccare su Yes).

Initial configuration

If you need to start Thunderbird, go to Start > Programs > Mozilla Thunderbird > Mozilla Thunderbird.

Remember that you can drag this item of the Start menu to a more convenient location, e.g. to the first panel of the Start menu.

If you have a firewall such as Zone Alarm that monitors outgoing programs, it will warn you that a new program is trying to access the Internet. That's OK. Allow it permanently to access the Internet (in Zone Alarm, click Remember before clicking Yes).

Importazione delle impostazioni

Se Thunderbird ha trovato il vostro programma di posta attuale ed è in grado di importarne le impostazioni, vi chiederà se lo volete fare. Cliccate sul nome del vostro programma di posta attuale nella finestra di dialogo Importazione guidata e cliccate su Avanti. Le impostazioni della vostra casella di posta, la rubrica degli indirizzi e altri dati, compreso il vostro archivio di messaggi, verranno importati in Thunderbird.

Se preferite provvedere a mano oppure se sul vostro computer non è installato alcun programma di posta, cliccate su Non importare nulla e poi su Avanti. Più sotto troverete le istruzioni per l'impostazione manuale di una casella di posta.

L'importazione può richiedere un po' di tempo se avete molta posta nel vostro archivio. Non preoccupatevi: l'importazione non è distruttiva e il vostro programma di posta attuale rimane utilizzabile e conserva tutti i propri dati. Tuttavia, da questo momento in poi vi conviene smettere di utilizzarlo, per evitare che alcuni messaggi vengano archiviati in Thunderbird e altri nel programma di posta attuale. Questo causerebbe sicuramente una gran confusione.

Importing settings

If Thunderbird has found your current e-mail program and is able to import its settings, it will ask you if you want to do so. Just click on the name of your current e-mail program in the Import Wizard dialog box and then click Next. Your account settings, address book and other data, including your mail, will be imported into Thunderbird.

If you prefer to do this manually or don't have an e-mail program already installed, click Don't import anything and then click Next. You'll find instructions for manually setting up an account below.

Importing may take a while if you have a lot of mail in your archives. Don't worry: it's nondestructive. Your current e-mail program is still usable and retains all its data, but from this point onward you should stop using it, to avoid some messages being stored in Thunderbird while others are stored in your current e-mail program. That would be very confusing.

Programma di posta predefinito

Default mail application

Thunderbird will ask you if you want it to become your default mail application. In other words, do you want to use Thunderbird as your everyday e-mail program? And do you want Thunderbird to pop up when you click on an e-mail address you find in a Web page?

Of course you do, otherwise you wouldn't be doing all this. So click Do not display this dialog again and then click Yes.

Password

Se avete scelto di importare le impostazioni, Thunderbird vi chiederà la password della vosta casella. Digitatela (verrà visualizzata sotto forma di una fila di asterischi per motivi di sicurezza), cliccate su Usare gestione password per memorizzare questa password, così non verrete importunati in futuro da questa richiesta e cliccate su OK.

Comparirà una casella informativa: leggetela e cliccate su OK.

Password

If you've chosen to import settings, Thunderbird will ask you for the password to your mailbox. Type it (it will be displayed as a row of asterisks for security reasons), click Use Password Manager to remember this password so you won't be hassled again by this request, and click OK.

You'll get a warning box. Read it and then click OK.

Impostazione manuale di un account di posta

Se avete scelto di non importare le impostazioni del vostro account di posta, otterrete una serie di finestre di dialogo che vi chiedono le impostazioni.

Lasciate attivato Account di posta e cliccate su Avanti.
Nella finestra di dialogo Identità, immettete il vostro nome nel campo Nome e il vostro indirizzo di e-mail nel campo Indirizzo email. Poi cliccate su Avanti.
Nella finestra di dialogo Informazioni sul server, normalmente lasciate attivata l'opzione POP. In Server in ingresso, digitate il nome del server POP. Se avete altri account di posta e volete conservare la posta ricevuta di ciascun account in una cartella distinta, togliete il segno di spunta da Usa 'Posta in arrivo' globale.
In Server in uscita, immettete il nome del server SMTP. Poi cliccate su Avanti.
Nella finestra di dialogo Nomi utente, immettete il vostro nome utente (che di solito coincide con l'indirizzo di posta completo) in Nome utente posta in entrata e in Nome utente in uscita. Poi cliccate su Avanti.
Nella finestra di dialogo Nome account, immettete un nome a piacere che vi consenta di identificare questo account. Poi cliccate su Avanti.
Nella finestra di dialogo Congratulazioni, se volete scaricare subito la posta nuova in entrata, lasciate attivata la casella Scarica subito i messaggi, altrimenti disattivatela. Poi cliccate su Fine.

La configurazione di base a questo punto è completa. Collaudatela, per assicurarvi di aver immesso correttamente tutte le informazioni. La prima volta che scaricate la posta, Thunderbird vi chiederà la password dell'account. Digitatela (verrà visualizzata come una fila di asterischi per motivi di sicurezza), cliccate su Usare gestione password per memorizzare questa password, così non verrete importunati in futuro da questa richiesta, e cliccate su OK.

Se compare una finestra informativa, leggetela e cliccate su OK.

Dopo che avete verificato di poter inviare e ricevere e-mail tramite Thunderbird, è ora di renderlo più sicuro. Thunderbird è già molto sicuro in partenza, ma qualche ottimizzazione può migliorare ulteriormente la sua sicurezza.

Prima, però, date un'occhiata alle seguenti note di configurazione.

Setting up an account manually

If you've chosen not to import your account settings, you'll get a series of dialog boxes asking you for your e-mail settings.

New account setup: click Email account. Click Next.
Identity: enter your name in the Your name box and your e-mail address in the Email address box. Click Next.
Server information: usually you leave POP selected. In the Incoming Server box, type the name of your provider's POP server. Unless you have other e-mail accounts and want to store the incoming mail of each account in separate folders, leave Use Global Inbox checked.
In the Outgoing server box, type the name of your provider's SMTP server. Click Next.
User names: type your user name as given to your by your Internet provider (this is usually the same as your full e-mail address) in Incoming user name and in Outgoing user name. Click Next.
Account name: type a descriptive name of your choice. Click Next.
Congratulations: if you want to download your new incoming e-mails immediately with Thunderbird, leave the check mark in Download messages now; otherwise, uncheck it. Either way, click Finish.

Your basic configuration is now complete. Test it to make sure you've entered all the information correctly. The first time you download e-mail, Thunderbird will ask you for your account password. Type it (it will be displayed as a row of asterisks for security reasons), click Use Password Manager to remember this password so you won't be hassled again by this request, and click OK.

You may get a warning box. Read it and then click OK.

Once you've made sure that you can send and receive e-mail with Thunderbird, it's time to make it more secure. Thunderbird is very secure out of the box, but a little tweaking can improve its security even further.

But before you do that, have a look at the following configuration notes.

Se avete bisogno di definire altri account, scegliete Strumenti > Impostazioni account e immettete i vari parametri.
Il valore di reply-to (l'indirizzo al quale pervengono le risposte se il destinatario di un vostro messaggio vi risponde usando la funzione Reply, o Rispondi, del suo programma di posta) è impostato automaticamente in modo che coincida con il vostro indirizzo specificato in Thunderbird. Pertanto, se volete ricevere la posta allo stesso indirizzo dal quale la spedite, non dovete fare nulla. Se invece volete ricevere le risposte a un altro indirizzo, andate in Strumenti > Impostazioni account, scegliete il nome della vostra casella e immettete in Indirizzo per risposte l'indirizzo presso il quale volete ricevere le risposte.
Normalmente, se non spostate il vostro computer da un luogo a un altro e se usate sempre lo stesso fornitore d'accesso, tutti gli account usano lo stesso server in uscita (SMTP).
Come impostazione predefinita, Thunderbird controlla automaticamente se ci sono nuovi messaggi ogni volta che lo avviate e ogni dieci minuti. Se volete cambiare questo valore oppure disattivare il controllo automatico, andate in Strumenti > Impostazioni account > Impostazioni server e agite sulle impostazioni di Controlla nuovi messaggi all'avvio e Controlla nuovi messaggi ogni ... minuti.

Configuration notes

If you need to create additional accounts, choose Tools > Account Settings and enter their settings.
The reply-to setting (i.e., the address to which answers are sent if the recipient of one of your messages answers by using the Reply command of her e-mail program) is set automatically so that it is equal to your e-mail address. So if you want to receive your mail at the same address from which you send it, you don't need to do anything. If instead you want to receive replies at another address, go to Tools > Account Settings, choose the name of your mailbox and enter the address where you want to receive replies in Reply-to Address.
Usually, unless you move your computer from one place to another, and if you always use the same Internet provider, all the accounts use the same outgoing server (SMTP server).
By default, Thunderbird automatically checks for new messages every time you start it and every ten minutes. To change this setting, go to Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings and change the settings of Check for new messages at startup and Check for new messages every ... minutes.

Personalizzazione e sicurezza

Visualizza > Layout: scegliete la visualizzazione che preferite. Io uso la Visualizzazione classica. Attivate, se volete, Anteprima messaggio (se non è già attivato).
Visualizza > Corpo del messaggio come: attivate Testo semplice. Questa è una modifica di sicurezza che previene molte truffe.
Dal menu Visualizza, disattivate Mostra allegati in linea. Questo impedisce la visualizzazione automatica delle immagini non adatte (ossia pubblicità pornografiche e roba simile). Se volete visualizzare un'immagine che qualcuno vi ha mandato, fate doppio clic sul nome dell'immagine nell'Anteprima messaggio.
Strumenti > Controlli posta indesiderata. Cliccate su OK nella finestra informativa. Le impostazioni predefinite della finestra di dialogo Controlli posta indesiderata vanno benissimo, ma potete attivare l'opzione Sposta messaggi in arrivio identificati come posta indesiderata in e scegliere la cartella "Posta indesiderata". In questo modo, lo spam viene trasferito automaticamente dalla vostra cartella della posta in arrivo alla cartella Posta indesiderata.
Potreste inoltre trovare comodo attivare l'opzione Elimina automaticamente, da questa cartella, i messaggi segnati come posta indesiderata più vecchi di ... giorni, così Thunderbird vuoterà la vostra cartella Posta indesiderata dopo un numero specifico di giorni, risparmiandovi l'incombenza di provvedere a mano.
Un'altra modifica utile è attivare l'opzione Quando vengono segnati manualmente messaggi come posta indesiderata e l'opzione Sposta il messaggio nella cartella 'Posta indesiderata'.
Cliccate su OK quando avete finito.
Strumenti > Impostazioni account > Composizione e indirizzamento. Disattivate Componi i messaggi in HTML. Questo vi impedisce di usare grassetti, corsivi e altri orpelli grafici nella posta che spedite, ma è un grande miglioramento per la sicurezza dei destinatari dei vostri messaggi. Tanto, se sono astuti come voi, hanno comunque impostato il loro programma di posta in modo da ignorare gli effetti grafici e visualizzare i messaggi come testo semplice.
Strumenti > Opzioni > Avanzate. Vi consiglio di disattivare l'opzione Consenti le immagini remote se il mittente è in..., perché i mittenti possono essere falsificati e le immagini remote vengono usati dagli spoofer (impostori) e dagli spammer per tracciarvi e verificare che leggete i loro messaggi.
Fra l'altro, è qui che si gestiscono le password degli account di posta quando volete cambiarle.

Customizing and securing Thunderbird

View > Layout: choose the layout you prefer (I use the Classic view). Activate the Message pane if it's not already activated and you find it useful.
View > Message body as: activate Plain text. This is a security tweak that prevents many scams.
From the View menu, deactivate Display attachments inline. This stops inappropriate images (i.e., porn adverts and similar stuff) from being displayed automatically. If you want to view a picture someone has sent you, you double-click on the name of the picture in the message pane.
Tools > Junk mail controls. Read the dialog box and then click OK. The default settings in the Junk mail controls dialog box are fine, but you can activate Move incoming messages determined to be Junk mail to and select "Junk" folder. This will transfer spam automatically from your inbox to the Junk folder.
You might also want to activate Automatically delete junk messages older than... days, so that Thunderbird will clear your Junk folder after a specified number of days, saving you the bother of doing this manually.
Another handy tweak is to activate When I manually mark messages as Junk and select Move them to the "Junk" folder.
Click OK when you've finished.
Tools > Account settings > Composition and addressing. Deactivate Compose messages in HTML format. This stops you from using bold and underline and other fancy graphics in your outgoing e-mails, but it's a big bonus for the security of the recipients of your e-mails. Besides, if they're as smart as you, they've set up their e-mail program to ignore fancy graphics and display e-mails as plain text anyway.
Tools > Options > Advanced. I suggest you deactivate Allow remote images if the sender is in my..., because senders can be spoofed and remote images are used by spoofers and spammers to track you and check that you read their messages.
By the way, this is where you manage the passwords of your e-mail accounts when you decide to change them.

Dov'è il mio archivio di posta?

Normalmente, ossia se non gli dite di fare diversamente, Thunderbird memorizza tutte le cartelle di posta all'interno di una cartella situata in [nome del disco rigido]:\documents and settings\[nome utente]\dati applicazioni\thunderbird\profiles\.

Where's my e-mail archive?

Unless you ask Thunderbird to behave differently, all your e-mail folders are stored in a subfolder of [hard disk letter]:\documents and settings\[user name]\application data\thunderbird\profiles\.

You can check the exact path in Tools > Account settings > Server settings, in the Local directory box.

Come faccio a migrare il mio archivio di posta da una installazione di Thunderbird a un'altra?

Per prima cosa bisogna localizzare l'archivio di posta, come descritto qui sopra. Poi copiate tutta la cartella thunderbird soprastante, salvandola altrove (su un altro disco, in un'altra cartella, dove vi pare). Copiando la cartella thunderbird, copiate anche tutte le impostazioni degli account. Successivamente, dite al nuovo Thunderbird di usare la cartella che avete copiato invece di quella di default.

NOTA: Se state migrando da una versione di Thunderbird all'altra sullo stesso computer, Thunderbird è abbastanza furbo da ricordarsi automaticamente l'ubicazione dell'archivio di posta e delle personalizzazioni, per cui non occorre fare nulla: il nuovo Thunderbird acquisisce automaticamente tutte le impostazioni del precedente e si trova da solo l'archivio di posta.

How do I transfer my e-mail archive from one installation of Thunderbird to another?

First of all, you need to locate your e-mail archive, as described above. Then you copy the entire overlying thunderbird folder and save it somewhere else (on another hard disk, in another folder, wherever you like). By copying the thunderbird folder you also copy all the settings of the accounts. You then tell the new installation of Thunderbird to use the folder to which you copied your archive instead of using the default folder.

NOTE: If you're migrating from one version of Thunderbird to another on the same computer, Thunderbird is smart enough to remember automatically the location of the e-mail archive and the settings, so you don't need to do anything: the new installation of Thunderbird acquires automatically all the settings of the previous version and automatically finds the e-mail archive.

You might want to have a look at Mozbackup, a free program that saves and restores the customized settings of Firefox, Thunderbird and Mozilla.

Come disinstallo Thunderbird?

Usate la consueta procedura di Windows:

Start > Impostazioni > Pannello di controllo > Installazione applicazioni, scegliete Cambia/Rimuovi programmi, selezionate Mozilla Thunderbird dall'elenco e cliccate su Cambia/Rimuovi.
Compare una finestra di dialogo che chiede Si è certi di voler disinstallare...? Confermate cliccando su Sì. La disinstallazione è terminata.

How do I uninstall Thunderbird?

Use the standard Windows procedure:

Start > Settings > Control panel > Add or remove programs, choose Change or remove programs, choose Mozilla Thunderbird from the list and click Change/Remove.
A dialog box will ask you Are you sure...?. Confirm your intentions by clicking Yes. Uninstallation is complete.

Come posso aumentare lo spazio sfruttabile sullo schermo?

Cliccate sul segno "meno" accento all'intestazione dei messaggi ricevuti: questo riduce le dimensioni della banda informativa dedicata ai dati del mittente.

Potete anche rimpicciolire o eliminare le icone o le diciture della barra dei pulsanti:

Visualizza > Barre degli strumenti > Personalizza.
Scegliete l'opzione che preferite da Mostra: icone e testo, solo icone oppure solo testo.
Se volete icone più piccole, attivate Icone piccole.
Cliccate su OK.

How can I improve the way screen space is used?

Click on the "minus" sign next to the heading of the messages you receive. This will shrink the size of the box that contains information about the sender.

You can also shrink or eliminate altogether the icons or captions of the toolbar:

View > Toolbars > Customize.
Choose the option you prefer from Show: icons and text, icons only, or text only.
If you want smaller icons, activate Use small icons.
Click OK.

Come gestisco gli allegati?

Quando arriva un allegato, fatevi sopra un doppio clic in Thunderbird e scegliete sempre Salva su disco. Una volta salvato, scegliete Visualizza cartella salvataggio, esaminate il file con un antivirus aggiornato e, se necessario, apritelo usando Apri con in Esplora Risorse.

Fate molta attenzione se usate l'opzione Da ora in avanti esegui questa azione per tutti i file come questo. Si presta ad abusi che possono compromettere la vostra sicurezza. E' più prudente la gestione manuale dei singoli allegati.

Anche se non li salvate come descritto nel paragrafo precedente, gli allegati scaricati vengono memorizzati nell'archivio di posta insieme al messaggio al quale si riferiscono. Se volete eliminare un allegato dall'archivio, eliminate il messaggio corrispondente.

How do I manage attachments?

When you receive an attachment, double-click on it in Thunderbird and always choose Save to disk. Once you've saved the attachment, choose Show File Location, check the file with an up-to-date antivirus and then, if you need to open the attachment, open it by using the Open With menu item in Windows Explorer.

Be very careful if you use the option labeled Do this automatically for files like this from now on. it can be easily abused, compromising your security. Manual management of each individual attachment is safer.

Even if you don't save attachments as described above, downloaded attachments are stored in your e-mail archive together with the message to which they were attached. If you want to eliminate an attachment from your archive, delete its accompanying message.
