Il testo vero è proprio è molto variabile, ma la sua falsariga è sempre più o meno questa: complimenti, avete vinto vari milioni di dollari a una lotteria internazionale, senza neppure spendere i soldi del biglietto: infatti siete stati scelti tra tanti nominativi raccolti su Internet. Per riscuotere la vincita e avere maggiori informazioni, non dovete fare altro che contattare il sito della lotteria in questione. Soldi facili, insomma.

A parte il fatto che la storia puzza di bruciato lontano un chilometro (visto che a questo mondo nessuno regala soldi, neppure a scopo promozionale -- e quale promozione ci possa essere, visto che si chiede la massima riservatezza pena la "squalifica") e dovrebbe essere evidente che si tratta di un affare sporco, molti lettori si sono chiesti cosa c'è dietro questi inviti; in altre parole, come funziona la truffa.
Semplice: è una variante della "truffa alla nigeriana" (quella del funzionario che chiede via e-mail il vostro aiuto "personale e riservato" per sbloccare qualche milione di dollari). Se rispondete all'appello (che fa capo a un'infinita varietà di siti come ad esempio http://www.internationallottouk.com), scoprirete che per riscuotere la somma vi chiedono del denaro, per delle improbabili "spese amministrative" o imprecisate "pratiche burocratiche". Se siete così ingenui da abboccare e mandate i soldi richiesti, salta fuori qualche altro "intralcio" risolvibile soltanto con un'ulteriore piccola spesa, e così via.

C'è un modo molto semplice per distinguere i truffatori dalle lotterie autentiche: per partecipare a quelle autentiche bisogna (guarda un po' che strano) pagare il biglietto. Le lotterie autentiche si sostentano grazie alla vendita dei biglietti, che tutti insieme concorrono a formare il monte premi. Niente biglietto, niente monte premi, e la truffa è in agguato.
